How You Can Help Detained Immigrant and Refugee Children

June 26, 2019

We need to raise our collective voices—again—to stop the Trump Administration’s injustice and cruelty against immigrant and refugee children and their families. Together, we helped end the Trump Administration’s “zero tolerance” policy and the mass family separation that resulted—and we can succeed in pushing back again.

Providing adequate care and protection to immigrant and refugee children is not a partisan issue. Children need and deserve care regardless of where they are born.

STEP 1: EDUCATE YOURSELF

Learn about the Policies that Protect Refugee Children

Educating ourselves on key policies that will ensure fair and just treatment of migrant children is one of the biggest steps we can take toward advocating for migrant and refugee children. Many of these policies can help address core systemic causes of large scale migration as well as mass cruelty and neglect against these children. KIND is currently advocating for the following pieces of legislation.

STEP 2: SPREAD THE WORD

Follow and Share on Social

Let people know the injustice migrant children face is not acceptable, and we must take a stand to make it stop. Follow KIND on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and use the following hashtags to amplify our efforts to protect children:

  • #ProtectFamilies
  • #RemainInMexico
  • #MPP
  • #AsylumSeekers

STEP 3: SUSTAIN THE CAUSE

Give What You Can

Children are being separated from their families, forced to live in detention centers for months at a time in horrible conditions, and often sent to court all on their own. Every dollar you give can help these vulnerable children access legal representation in their deportation proceedings and ultimately to safety.

Every single dollar makes a difference – please give what you can, and together we can protect these children!

STEP 4: STAND FOR CHANGE

Call Your Representative

The most impactful way you can help advocate for large-scale change for migrant children is by calling your representative and urging them to support the policies we outlined above. But while we can provide them, your voice is the one and only way we can ensure they hear them!

When you call, you can use the following talking points:

  • Tell your Representative that you oppose the “metering” and MPP policies, and request that Congress deny funding to implement these dangerous policies.
  • Demand appropriate and safe conditions at detention centers and that state-licensed child welfare professionals are brought in to care for these children. More information here.
  • Urge your Member of Congress to co-sponsor the policies we outlined above
